The Nu Tantras Of The Uttarakaulas by John Power
This is an important new book by John Power, limited to only 1,000 copies.
Like many young people of the ‘60s, John found the need to acquire a spiritual teacher, which was answered when he was introduced to Guru Mahendranath. Owing to his interest in Tantrik art and philosophy he began a correspondence with Guru Mahendranath, known as Dadaji, in India, which lasted 20 years until Dadaji’s health failed prior to his death. They met several times when Dadaji was staying in London.
Sri Satguru Dadaji Mahendranath, knew both the infamous occultist, poet and scholar Aleister Crowley and Gerald Gardiner, the founder of Modern Witchcraft. Dadaji’s first initiation into the occult came as a boy from his aunt Clay Palmer, the Witch of Rottingdean, who had been a fortune teller for Queen Victoria. This marked the first steps into cults where Mother Goddess held sway.
After Crowley’s death, and on his advice, Dadaji set sail for India and became a wandering Sadhu. He was initiated as a Nath Yogi; one of India’s oldest indigenous cults, followers of the God Siva, and who’s Supreme Goddess is Kali. Many other initiations followed, including another Tantrik initiation into the North Indian or Uttarakaula lineage. There are five main Tantrik schools: one for each of the cardinal directions and the fifth for the quintessence above, as we rest on Mother Earth.
In 1979, John was initiated into the Uttarakaula lineage. Over the following months Dadaji sent John four manuscripts of lore, legend and practices associated with that lineage - which is reviewed in ‘Nu Tantras of the Uttarakaulas’. John was also Andrew Chumbley's guru in the Uttarakaula tradition.
John holds a Masters Degree in Jungian Psychology and Art Therapy. He has taught in schools, colleges, and prisons for over 30 years. Like Austin Spare he has little time for the Art establishment - "Even Art Schools can smother, as much as foster, creativity."
Review by Lalita Devi, Canadian Initiate and Trantric Yogini
"The book by John Power is one of the first attempts I have seen to write a critical analysis of some Mahendranath's writings. John was entrusted with the Uttarakaulas trantric aspect of our world and he has obviously nurtured and worked with his speciality for, as he says, 21 years (and more now). At the end of his analytical work he includes original and very creative and fascinating rituals that are possibly the summation of his experience. It is quirky and personal and that adds greatly to its value. I have often gotten swamped by Mahendranath's large output of written words. To see a few of his major tantras re-worded, discussed, analysed and emotionally digested is so helpful. I recommend that those who are interested in the works of Mahendranath give this work more than a quick cursory glance."
Where Witchcraft Lives by Doreen Valiente
Where Witchcraft Lives by Doreen Valiente (A classic title re-released as a numbered limited edition of 1000, first printed in 1962, UK)
This little gem of a book, Doreen’s first ever writing, should really be treated as an historical document. Doreen researches and presents many folklore and witchcraft practices which had hitherto been consigned to a hidden world. In the book, Doreen describes herself as a ‘student of witchcraft’ though at the time of writing, she was a high priestess. She never stopped investigating and honing her own craft. The Centre For Pagan Studies has now released this fabulous edition, with the help of Ronald Hutton, Brighton Museum and Sussex Archaeological Society, as a foundation for the Doreen Valiente Trust which will look after all her artefacts and manuscripts for future generations. Proceeds of the book go to the Trust and the future museum that will exhibit her world famous collection, and White Witch is proud to be selling this limited edition book of 1000 copies in support of The Centre for Pagan Studies.
